You can't possibly do a long weekend in Rome without seeing the city’s stunning landmarks. Rome’s architecture dates back to 118 AD and impressive Roman architectural masterpieces can be spotted across the entirety of the city. Tourist favorites such as the Sistine Chapel, the Colosseum and the Vatican are well worth a visit. We recommend grouping the sights to avoid traveling miles across the city - follow along for our suggested route and pick and choose for your weekend itinerary:
- Take a morning trip to see the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain. Rising early means you can beat the crowds, take your Instagram photos in peace and pack more exploring into your day. You’ll also have the excuse to stop by the famed Sant’ Eustachio cafe for breakfast and an espresso. This coffee shop has been open since 1983 and is adored by locals and tourists alike. Only a stone's throw from the two landmarks and reputed to serve some of the best coffee and pastries in all of Rome, it is well worth stopping by to fuel up for more exploring.
- Contrary to popular opinion, we suggest visiting the Vatican not first thing in the morning like most tourists will be recommended to do, but rather later in the afternoon. You'll often find the tourist masses have long gone and you'll have much less of a queue. While you're over in that part of town, visit the Castel Sant'Angelo commissioned by Roman Emperor Hadrian. Be sure to check before you go, as often the first or last Sunday of the month, entry can be free! If you're looking for aperitivo or dinner after sightseeing in this area, head to a less touristy part of town called Prati to find lots of local restaurants and bars.
- Sometimes the best way to explore Rome, is simply to stroll and admire the beauty of the city. Head to the Colosseum and enjoy a grand walk up to the monument by arriving to the amphitheater along Via dei Fori Imperiali through the ruins of the Roman Forum. Cool off with a drink on the square in nearby Monti - grab a drink from a kiosk or bar on Piazza della Madonna dei Monti and hang like the locals whilst only a stone's throw from the city's main landmarks. Tip - buy a combined ticket to see the Roman Forum and the Colosseum and skip the line for the Colosseum!
Of course, Rome has endless opportunities for exploration and not everything can be done in a matter of days. Instead, it is up to you to pick and choose your favorites from our guide and on your way, you're sure to stumble upon some amazing food, drink and architectural finds of your own.
