Gothenburg has earned international acclaim for its unwavering commitment to sustainability, consistently leading in the GDS-Index and being recognized as the European Capital of Smart Tourism in 2020.
The city boasts an array of sustainability-certified venues, hotels, and restaurants, offering planners a sustainable experience. Gothenburg's dedication to sustainability also extends to its events and festivals, with Way Out West becoming the first ISO 20121- certified music festival.
“We always include sustainability in our proposals and take pride in challenging event planners to make responsible choices, giving them advice and guidance, sharing resources and connecting them to local community projects through our legacy program,” says Katarina Thorstensson, Sustainability Strategist & Destination Development at Göteborg & Co.
The legacy program enables planners to make a positive impact, which could include anything from cleaning litter from beaches to helping socially and economically disadvantaged groups access educational and cultural opportunities.
“We have lots of case studies of sustainable initiatives in the city, for example the
Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel Gothenburg has installed composting machines that recycle the hotel’s food waste. The compost is then used fertilize local farmer’s crops, which the hotel buys its fruit and vegetables from. It’s a fantastic circular model and a lovely story to share,” says Thorstensson.
Nils Torring, Director of Sales & Marketing at Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel Gothenburg, says the hotel has implemented several other sustainable initiatives including Meatless Monday, where the lunch of the day is vegetarian, cultivation beds outside the city for growing the hotel’s vegetables, and also co-operates with charity partners.
“For example, we work with The Perfect World Foundation by planting trees through David Attenborough Forrest together with hotel guests, and also selling toy apes where 100% of the revenue goes to the work to keep the Bonobos free in the wild,” he explains.
Meanwhile, Radisson Blu’s other property in Gothenburg, the
Radisson Blu Riverside Hotel, Gothenburg, was designed with sustainability in mind, and has achieved the internationally recognized LEED Gold certification. In addition, both hotels are carbon offsetting all events and meetings, no longer use single-use plastics, and focus on seasonal produce.
